مع أن العرب سباقين إلى المدن والإقامة فيها، إلا أن التحضر العربي المعاصر ليس إمتداداً طبيعياً لظاهرة قديمة؛ لقد ارتفعت معدلات التحضر في المجتمع العربي إرتفاعاً كبيراً.
وتبرز عند تحديد العوامل التي كانت وراء هذه الظاهرة ستة هي الأهم: الإستقلال السياسي وما قاد إليه من إهتمام الدولة الوطنية بتحديث المجتمع؛ والعامل الثاني هو إعادة تصنيف المناطق والتي تتم في الغالب لصالح البيئة الحضرية، ثم إرتفاع معدلات الزيادة الطبيعية للسكان، وبتمثل العامل الرابع في الهجرة من الريف إلى المدينة والتي بلغت معدلات سنوية عالية؛ كما لعبت الهجرة الخارجية، وخصوصاً في الأقطار النفطية دوراً هاماً في نمو المجتمع الحضري؛ وأخيراً أدت عمليات التهجير التي حدثت في المنطقة إلى تكاثر عدد المقيمين في تلك المدن القريبة من مناطق العمليات الحربية التي تسببت في تهجير نسبة من السكان من ديارهم.
لا توجد بيئة حضرية أو تجربة حضرية تخلو من المشكلات، وبعض المشكلات التي صاحبت التجربة العربية الحضرية هي من التي يمكن أن توجد في أي مجتمع حضري معاصر؛ ومن المشكلات التي تذكر في حالة التجربة العربية الإردحام الذي وصل إلى درجة عالية في بعض العواصم، ثم إنتشار أحزمة الفقر والسكن العشوائي، وإرتفاع معدلات الجريمة والجنوح، وتدهور البيئة وتلوثها، وإرتفاع معدلات البطالة، ثم إنتشار مظاهر الترييف في أغلب المراكز الحضرية.
