إن علم الحاسوب computer هو في تطور مستمر هائل وسريع جداً وفقاً لمتطلبات العصر، والتقدم التقني في جميع مجالات العلوم. بناءً على هذا، رأيت أن أضع هذا الكتاب في مجال الحاسوب، أمام أبنائنا الطلاب، لمساعدتهم في فهم أساسيات هذا العلم وليكن مرجعاً ثقافياً للاخوة المهتمين بثقافة هذا العلم، واكتساب أساسيات فكرية ومفاهيم علمية صحيحة، النوع من فروع العلم. إن الأمل المعقود أن يضيف هذا الكتاب شيئاً ما إلى مكتبتنا العربية التي ما تزال تفتقر إلى بعض المراجع في هذا الفرع من العلم.
يقسم الكتاب إلى خمسة فصول: الفصل الأول: نظم معالجة البيانات والمعلومات، والفارق بينهما والتطور الذي حدث لهما في كيفية المعالجة وطرائق تطورها. الفصل الثاني: الأنظمة العددية: يقدم الفكرة لمفاهيم الأنظمة العددية ومدى علاقتها بالتركيبة الطبيعية لمكونات الحاسوب.
الفصل الثالث: تمثيل البيانات داخل الحاسوب:يمثل الربط العلمي بين مركبات الحاسوب، وفكرة البيانات، والمعلومات وطرائق معالجتها وعلاقتها، بالتركيبة الطبيعية للحاسوب، وكيفية استخدام الفكرة لعلمية التخزين والمعالجة والتطور الذي حصل ومدى ارتباطه بالحاسوب. الفصل الرابع: يركز على فكرة أن علم الحاسوب ذو شقين أساسيين هما: الجزء المادي والجزء البرمجي (المنهجي)، مع بعض التوسع في شرح لأنواع وحدات الحاسوب المادية وكيفية ربط مفاهيمها بالأفكار العلمية السابقة. الفصل الخامس مكونات الحاسوب المنهجية (البرمجية): يعرف القارئ بمفهوم البرامج والتتبع والتطور التاريخي لهذه العلوم البرمجية مما يجعله جاهزاً لتشغيل هذه الآلة واستخدامها وفقاً لبعض الدروس العملية.
