القصيدة العلوية هذه هي أول ملحمة عربية هائية على الإطلاق وتاريخ شعري لصدر الإسلام. بلغ عدد أبياتها 5595 بيتاً تضمنت الحوادث التاريخية التي حدثت في عهد الإمام أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه منذ ولادته إلى يوم استشهاده وقد مدح الشاعر الشيخ خز عل كل في هذه الملحمة في مناسبات عديدة ثم حذفها لتكون الملحمة المسطر في هذا الكتاب خاصة بالإمام علي رضي الله عنه من غير مدح لسواه.وقضى الشاعر في نظم هذه القصيدة المباركة وشرحها وتهذيبها والتعليق عليها حوالي سنتين.
