يعتبر كتاب "التعرف لمذهب أهل التصوف" من أقدم وأدق الكتب التي تناولت هذا العلم بمصطلحاته ورجاله، فقد وضعه العلامة تاج الإسلام أبو بكر محمد بن إسحاق البخاري الكلاباذي المتوفي سنة 380 هـ في أوائل القرن الرابع للهجرة، وهو الوقت الذي بلغ فيه التصوف ذروته وكماله العلمي والفني، سواء من حيث المنهج أو من حيث الرجال والأعلام، فجاء هذا الكتاب صورة صادقة ومرآة واضحة تعكس ما وصل إليه القوم في مواجيدهم ومجاهداتهم.
والمصنف بعد هذا لم يكتف بذكر الأسماء وسرد الأقوال وحكايات الأحوال، بل اتبع في كتابه أسلوبا بارعاً يتسم بالسرد والعرض ثم يدلي برأيه وحجته، وهو العالم العارف الذائق، كما اتبع منهجاً علمياً دقيقاً قل ان التزمه مصنف قديماً أو حديثاً، حيث قام بوصف طريقة كل واحد من أهل الطريقة الذين ذكرهم مبيناً غلته وسيرته من القول في التوحيد والصفات وسائر ما يتصل به مما وقعت فيه الشبهة عند من لم يعرف مذهبه ولم يخدم مشايخه، كاشفاً بلسان العلم ما أمكن كشفه، وواصفاً بظاهر البيان ما صلح وصفه، ليفهمه من لم يفهم إشارات أهل العرفان ويدركه من لم يدرك عباراتهم، وينتقي عنهم تأول الجاهلين، ويكون بياناً لمن أراد سلوك طريقه مفتقراً إلى الله تعالى في بلوغ تحقيقه. مستقياً كل ذلك مما حصله من كتبهم ورسائلهم، ومن تدبر كلامهم وفحص كتبهم. وهكذا ينتصب أمام القارئ عالم في التصوف يتميز بصفتين قلما تجتمعان في مصنف واحد. الصفة الأولى نظرية وهي صفة النقد والصفة الثانية هي صفة الصوفي الذي دخل في القوم وعرف مواجيدهم وذاق أحوالهم وثقافاتهم فكان هذا الكتاب الذي يعتبر فريداً في بابه.
