إنه بلسم الشجيّ وسلوة الكئيب وراحة العاني من حمله، وكم لأطباء النفوس من رجوع إلى تلك المظان وصدور، وليس شأن الطرفة بالقليل وقد فطرت النفس على حب القشيب والخيرة من الغض الحديث الرائع.
وإن للغفلة والغباوة، للبلادة والرعونة فعل الطيب والبلسم في الأرواح، والنشوة العامرة في الصدور، وقد أبينا إلا إستقاء ما انتقيناه من موارده، فقطفناه من كرومه، وشروحنا بعض غريبه، ولم نشأ أن نثقل هذا السفر بذكر الأسانيد والمراجع لها - ويقيننا أن الدارسين يتبينون ذلك دون كبير عناء - وأوردنا بعض ذلك في لغتنا وأسلوبنا إبتغاء الإقتصار والإيجاز.
وقد وزعنا فصول الكتاب كالتالي: الباب الأول: "غرائب الغفلة والحماقة"، الباب الثاني: "فكاهات التحميق"، الباب الثالث: "المداعبات"، الباب الرابع: "الفكاهات الذكية"، الباب الخامس: "المفارقات"، الباب السادس: "الفكاهة الشعرية"، الباب السابع: "طرائف ولطائف في قصص ضاحكة"، الباب الثامن: "من غرائب النحويين".
