ليس هذا الكتاب تأريخاً عاماً للإمبراطورية العثمانية، ولا يتناول دهاليز السياسة العثمانية أو تعقيدات الدبلوماسية الدولية في القرون التي أعقبت سيطرة العثمانيين على القسطنطينية عام 1543، بل يدور الكتاب حول "صورة" العثمانيين والغموض الملاحظ الذي صبغ الفهم الغربي للعثمانيين على مدى القرون التي وُجدت فيها الإمبراطورية العثمانية، والذي هو مستمر حتى وقتنا الحاضر؛ إذ يبدو أن العلاقة بين تركيا الحديثة وأوروبا ما تزال أسيرة مخاض مواقف تلك القرون.
لقد انطوت صفحة الإمبراطوريات العظيمة، البريطانية والروسية والألمانية والنمساوية - المجرية التي لطالما ازدت العثمانيين بوصفهم "رجل أوروبا المريض"، بيد أن العثمانيين عاشوا أطول منها جميعاً.
