للمدن مكانة متميزة في تاريخ الحضارة الإنسانية إذ أن كلا منها يضم عدداً كبيراً من السكان الذين يعيشون متقاربين ويكونون بعضهم مع بعض علاقات إجتماعية متعددة، ويتطلب تجمعهم نظماً إدارية تؤمن النظام والإستقرار والأمن وتيسر التقدم والإزدهار.
وتجمع العدد الكبير من الناس للعيش الدائم معاً في مكان واحد يبرز بشكل أوضح حاجاتهم المادية ويتطلب تخصصاً في العمل لتيسير توفير الحاجات الواسعة التي تؤمن مسكنهم ومأكلهم وملبسهم والمتطلبات الحياتية الأخرى التي تزداد أو تنقص معاً لطموحات السكان وأهوائهم وأذواقهم ومدى توافر الإمكانيات المادية لتحقيقها.
وقد ظهرت المدة في العراق منذ أزمنة قديمة، وانتشرت في أرجائه، وبقي بعضها قائماً أماداً طويلة، غير أن أوج إزدهارها كان في العهود الإسلامية التي بدأت عندما ضم العرب العراق إلى دولتهم الواسعة، وبلغت أوج عزها بعد أن اتخذ العباسيون مقر الخلافة في العراق، ودام هذا الإزدهار بضعة قرون ختمت بإستيلاء المغول على العراق وقضائه على الخلافة العباسية؛ ثم عاد العراق يشهد نمواً سريعاً في الحياة والحضارة، يرافقه نمو في المدن، وإزدهار في الحياة الحضرية، وتقدم في مختلف جوانبها الإجتماعية والإقتصادية والإدارية والفكرية.
ويصف هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا نشوء المدن ونموها في العراق منذ أقدم الأزمنة، ويتابع تطور أحوالها عبر مدة تتجاوز خمسة آلاف سنة جرت خلالها أحداث أثرت في المدن وأحوالها، فمرت بعهود من النمو والإزدهار، وفترات من الضمور والإنكماش، ولكنها ظلت قائمة حية، وهي تشهد إنفجاراً هائلاً في النمو والإزدهار، وتقدم أساساً لمستقبل مفعم بالخير والأمل.
