يعتبر كتاب درّة الحجال لابن القاضي المكناسي من أهم المؤلفات التي عنيت بتراجم الرجال من الأعيان في الفترة من القرن السابع الهجري إلى أوائل القرن الحادي عشر، ويعد الكتاب أحد ذيول كتاب ابن خلكان -وفيات الأعيان- ولم يختص الكتاب بفئة معينة أو طبقة محددة من الناس، بل جمع بين دفّتيه أسماء رجال عرفوا في ميادين مختلفة في الفترة التاريخية المذكورة.
هذا ويتميز الكتاب بمميزات وخصائص مهمة نذكر منها: أولاً: يذكر ابن القاضي في مقدمة كتابه ما ضمنه كتابه من تراجم وأعلام وقال (ولم أقتصر فيه على العلماء والأدباء بل كل من له شهرة، واستطار على اللسنة ذكره من أولى الفضل والأعلام، والصدور من ذوي السبق والأحلام، وذكرت من وفاة ابن خلكان إلى آخر العاشرة وأول الحادية عشرة مما حفظته من الأعيان)، وعلى ذلك فإنه لم يختص بفئة معينة أو طبقة محدودة من الناس.
ثانياً: تضمن الكتاب أحداثاً تاريخية هامة ذكرها ابن القاضي في ثنايا الترجمة لمجرد وقوعها في سنة وفاة المترجم. ثالثاً تضمنت الترجمة نماذج من سعر صاحب الترجمة، ويسهب في ذلك أحيانا ويختص أخرى، وقد برز الاهتمام بالنواحي الأدبية لصاحب الترجمة ويرجع ذلك إلى أن ابن القاضي نفسه كان شاعراً أدبياً.
رابعاً: البناء الداخلي للترجمة لم يكن له قالب واحد، بل كان يختلف من ترجمة لأخرى، فأحياناً بذكر اسم المترجم وسنة مولده، ونشأته وفضله ومصنفاته، ونماذج من شعره، وسنة وفاته، وأحياناً أخرى بذكر اسم المترجم وسنة مولدة، وسنة وفاته فقط.
