في دراسته هذه، يتناول الدكتور حسن علي قرعاوي "الحكمة في شعر المتنبي" فيطلعنا على الكثير من خصائص شعر المتنبي، كما يطلعنا على النفس التي كانت تتردى في جوانحه، والروح التي تتوقد بداخله، وبهذا المعنى يضعنا المؤلف أمام تجربة شعرية متقدمة، مليئة بخبرات الحياة المتنوعة، فجاء الحديث عن عصره، ومنابع ثقافته، وشخصيته الأدبية المتميزة التي بقيت على مرّ الأيام مناراً فكرياً للأجيال المتعاقبة، كما كانت حكمته بلسماً للنفوس المعذبة التي تذوقت مرارة البؤس، ولهذا اعتبر المؤلف "أن حكمته خلاصة تجاربه وآرائه في الناس والمجتمع وتقلب الزمان وتعثر الخط، فتركت صداها في نفوس عشاق الكلمة الهادفة والحكمة الصائبة، التي تضمد الجراح، وتبعث الطمأنينة في النفوس ...".
تتألف الدراسة من ثماني فصول: تبدأ بالمعنى اللغوي والإصطلاحي للفظة "حكمة"، ثم منابع الحكمة وأصولها التي أرجعتها إلى الإلهام الفطري، والتجارب الإنسانية، والكتب السماوية والوحي الإلهي، مروراً بالإزدهار الثقافي في عصر المتنبي، حيث تناولت الدراسة النهضة العلمية والحركة اللغوية، ثم حركة الترجمة وأثرها في المحيط الإسلامي وما كان لذلك من أثر في توجيه ثقافة المتنبي، وتكوين شخصيته الأدبية والفكرية، كما ركّزت الدراسة على الحكمة في شعره، وبيّنت المقصود من حكمة المتنبي وفلسفته، ومنابعها في شعره، ثم الموازنة بين شعر الحكمة عنده وحكمة أرسطو من حيث التأثر والتأثير، والمضمون ومدى التقارب والتباعد بين الحكمتين. ومن موضوعات الحكمة التي تم دراستها "الحياة والموت" ، "الإبتكار والتقليد" ، "وصلتها بقصائد المديح والهجاء، كما تناولت الدراسة القيمة الفنية لحكمة المتنبي، ومنزلة المتنبي بين شعراء عصره وتميزه بالحكمة وتربعه على إمارة الشعر العربي منذ عصره وإلى اليوم.
