عزيز العظمة هو كاتب ومفكر وباحث سوري ولد في دمشق عام 1947 م ، حاصل على شهادة الدكتوراه في العلوم الإسلامية من جامعة أكسفورد بعد أن تخرج منها، وكذلك درس في توبنغن في ألمانيا.
درّس في جامعات بيروت والكويت ومنذ 1985م عمل كبروفيسور للعلوم الإسلامية في جامعة الشارقة.

Book Description
يتصدى الدكتور عزيز العظمة -وهو غني عن التعريف- لأهم المسائل المتداولة بين المثقفين وما طال الحياة الثقافية العربية من جهود مردة إلى الأوضاع الاجتماعية والسياسية. وهو يعرض ما هو مألوف من المقالات والمذاهب إلى فحص العقل النقدي في مسعى لتناول الأمور بعيداً عن الوهم والهوى، إذ يرى أن النظر إلى تاريخنا البعيد على أنه ما زال المشكَّل الأسى ليومنا هذا هو أساس نسيج الأوهام الفكرية التي تتغذى بها الاتجاهات النكوصية في ثقافتنا.
ويرى د.العظمة أن صعود الخطاب الديني في الحياة العامة أمر حدث مؤخراً وقد جاء انقلاباً على نزعة التحديث وعائقاً لها. كما يدعو إلى أن تكون قضية العمانية في تاريخنا الحديث قضية محورية. يتألف الكتاب ثلاثة أقسام يبحث القسم الأول في موضوع الدين والدنيا في ما وراء الوهم غذ يرى الدكتور العظيمة أن موضع الاعتلال في النظر إلى واقعنا يكمن في توهم الثبات والقول بأن اليوم كالأمس.
ويدور الحديث في القسم الثاني حول دراسة التراث في ضوء العقل ويضم مقالات عن النص بين الأسطورة والتاريخ، والتاريخ والخلاص من التاريخ وحدود الخطاب الإصلاحى العربي. أما القسم الثالث فيضم مجموعة من الحوارات أجرى البعض منها في إطار مناقشة كتاب الدكتور عزيز العظمة (العلمانية من منظور مختلف)، ومجموعة من الحوارات التي أجريت معه في بعض الجرائد والمجلات.
