إن روايات التاريخ الإقتصادي في سجلها المؤرخون المسلمون لها أهمية خاصة كونها تكشف لنا عن تفاصيل الحياة الإقتصادية في العصور الإسلامية وقد تناولنا في رسالتنا الموسومة "دولة المماليك الشراكسة دراسة في التاريخ الإقتصادي من خلال كتاب نيل الأمل للمؤرخ عبد الباسط الظاهري" سيرة أحد المؤرخين المسلمين الذين ظهروا في الحقبة الأخيرة من العصر المملوكي وما سجله من معلومات قيمة عن التاريخ الإقتصادي لدولة المماليك الثانية المعروفة بدولة المماليك الشراكسة أو البرجية ومما دفعنا لإختيار هذا الموضوع هو أن هذا المؤرخ لم تتناوله أقلام الباحثين إلا قليلاً لعدم شهرته بسبب تأخر نشر كتبه التاريخية إذ أن أول كتاب تاريخي كبير حقق ونشر له كان سنة 2002م.
كما أن شهرة أبيه المؤرخ ابن شاهين الظاهري صاحب كتاب زبدة كشف الممالك وبيان الطرق والمسالك قد سبقته بكثير، إذ طبع كتابه المشار إليه عام 1894م، لذلك أردنا أن نبحث في سيرة عبد الباسط ومساهماته الفكرية ولا سيما في مجال التاريخ وما دونه لنا من معلومات خصت الجانب الإقتصادي في المدة التي أرّخ لها في كتابه نيل الأمل من سنة 744- 896هـ/ 1343- 1490م.
تألفت الدراسة من مقدمة وأربعة فصول وخاتمة حيث درسنا في الفصل الأول سيرة عبد الباسط الظاهري، أما الفصل الثاني الذي كان بعنوان مكانة عبد الباسط ومساهماته العلمية فقد بحثنا فيه العلوم التي درسها على شيوخ وعلماء عصره، أما الفصل الثالث فقد بحثنا فيه الواردات والنفقات وميادين النشاط الإقتصادي، ودرس الفصل الرابع العوامل المؤثرة في الحياة الإقتصادية.
