تعيش "بيلا" وحيدة بعد وفاة زوجها ورحيل ابنيها التوءمين للدراسة بعيداً عن البلدة، وتمتلك مع جارتها محلاً للتجميل والعناية بالأظافر وآخر لبيع الهدايا والعاديات، وأوشكت على بلوغ الأربعين من عمرها، تعود في أحد الأيام بعد الانتهاء من عملها لتجد عملاقاً يجلس على درابزين الشرفة الأمامية لمنزلها، وعندما تتعرف عليه تعلم أنه ابن عم بعيد لزوجها الراحل، وأنه فقد أمتعتع وحافظة نقوده في رحلة علمية، باعتباره من علماء الزلازل، وأنه جاء إلى هذه المنطقة لدراسة قشرة الأرض باعتبارها من الأماكن التي تحدث فهيا هزات أرضية كثيرة.
تحسن بيلا ضيافة قريب زوجها "ديفيد" ويقع في حبها من أول نظرة، وتقاوم هذا الحب نظراً للفرق الكبير في السن بينهما... ثم يستأجر كوخاً ملكها بجوار منزلها... إلى أين ستصل العلاقة بينهما؟
