يعد الشيخ محمد أبو زهرة ( 1898-1974م ) علماً من أعلام الفكر الإسلامي المعاصر ، ورائداً من رواد الفقه الإسلامي ، وصاحب دعوة ومنهج متميز في التأليف والكتابة ، ومن أهم سمات منهجه ، الجمع بين الأصالة والمعاصرة ، والإعتماد على العقل في نقل الحقائق وعرضها ومناقشتها ونقدها ، وضع إنتاجاً علمياً غزيراً ومتنوعاً في كافة علوم الشريعة الإسلامية من علوم قرآن وتفسير ، وعلوم عقيدة ودعوة وخطابة ، وعلوم تاريخ التشريع وتراجم الفقهاء والمجتهدين ، وغيرها ، حتى بلغت مجموع مؤلفاته ستة وستين كتاباً وبحثاً ...
ولمكانة الإمام محمد أبو زهرة ، قرر الدكتور محمد عثمان شبير أن يكتب عنه في سلسلة ( علماء ومفكرون معاصرون ، لمحات من حياتهم ، وتعريف بمؤلفاتهم ) . وهذا الكتاب هو العدد الثلاثون من السلسلة ويتبين من خلاله المؤلف ملامح من حياة أبو زهرة ويعرف بكتبه وأبحاثه تعريفاً يبيّن مضامينها ومنهجها والنتائج التي توصلت إليها ، ولهذا اعتبر المؤلف أن " أبو زهرة يستحق منا أن نكتب عنه كتباً وليس كتاباً واحداً أو كتابين أو ثلاثة ، فقد ترك رحمه الله تعالى لمن بعده مكتبة كاملة من روائع التراث الإسلامي في الفقه والعقيدة والتفسير وغير ذلك ... " .
ولهذا الغرض جمع المؤلف المواد العلمية المتعلقة بأبو زهرة من كتب ألّفها وأبحاث نشرها في مجلات علمية محكمة ، ومقالات نشرها في مجلات إسلامية معتبرة ، بالإضافة إلى إجراء مقابلات شخصية مع بعض تلاميذ الشيخ والذين عملوا معه في اللجان العلمية في مجمع البحوث الإسلامية مثل الشيخ حسن عيسى عبد الظاهر وآخرون ، والغاية تقديم إضافة علمية رصينة للمكتبة العربية والإسلامية ، ولطلاب العلم والمعرفة والدراسات الإسلامية ، ولكل مهتم بكتب التراث الإسلامي .
