إن للعلم منزلة وشرفاً رفيعاً وأن للعلماء مقام يتميز عن غيرهم من الناس، وقد خصهم القرآن في كثير من آياته كما أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ذكرهم في كثير من أحاديثه. بالإضافة إلى ذلك فإن فضل أهل البيت النبوي وشرفهم العلي نصت عليه الآيات القرآنية والأحاديث النبوية الشريفة.
حول هذين الموضوعين يدور هذا الكتاب الذي قسمه مؤلفه إلى قسمين. في القسم الأول، جمع السمهودي ما جاء في فضل العلم والعلماء في ثلاثة أبواب هي: الباب الأول: في إيراد الأدلة الدالة على فضل العلم والعلماء ووجوب توقيرهم واحترامهم والتحذير من بغضهم والأذى لبعضهم. الباب الثاني: في بيان منشأ معاداتهم. الباب الثالث: في آداب العلماء والمتعلمين منهم والآخذين عنهم.
أما القسم الثاني فقد جمع السمهودي ما ورد في فضل أهل البيت النبوي وذكر فيه خمسة عشر ذكراً. ويمكن القول بأن المؤلف تفرد بمثل هذا المصنف فلم يسبقه أحد من الجمع بين هذين الشرفين.
