اهتم المصريون بتربية أطفالهم وبخاصة وأن مرحلة الطفولة هي أول مراحل الحياة وأجدرها بالرعاية، وهي أدق مراحل التربية التي يجتازها الناشئ، إذ هو أكثر ما يكون استعداداً لتلقي ما ينبغي له من مبادئ السلوك. وشهد كتاب الإغريق باهتمام المصريين بتربية أطفالهم. ولقد ذكر ديودور "إن مما يميز حياة المصريين أن الطفل عندهم يلقى حظه الكامل من التربية والرعاية". ويقول سترابو "من التقاليد التي كان يرعاها المصريون بوجه خاص الحرص على تهذيب كل من يولد لهم من الأطفال".
وكان أطفال الطبقات الدنيا يعملون في الحقول أو المصانع حتى أصبحوا قادرين على العمل يشاركون فيه الكبار من الرجال والنساء وتشير العديد من النصوص إلى الرعاية التي كان ينالها الصغار من زملائهم في العمل. أما أبناء الأثرياء والمترفين فكانوا يلحقون بالمدارس في هذه السن المبكرة، وكان بعضهم ينال شرف مزاملة أبناء الملك في دراسته.
ولقد عاش الأطفال في مصر القديمة طفولتهم إلى حدّ بعيد فقد كان للعب مكانة كبيرة في حياة الأطفال المصريين، وكان له أثر واضح في تنمية مداركهم وترقية ملكاتهم وتدريبهم على كل جاد من العمل. تلك كانت جزء من صورة كلية شملت الحياة الاجتماعية في حضارة مصر القديمة، وذلك ضمن الدراسة التي ضمّها هذا الكتاب الذي تناول بالإضافة إلى ذلك وضمن حضارة مصر القديمة، التنظيمات السياسية والإدارية والفكر الديني والأدب في تلك الحضارة. وتمّ الانتقال من ثمّ لدراسة تلك الجوانب أيضاً في كل من حضارة العراق القديم وحضارة إيران. وجاءت تلك الدراسة ضمن أسلوب بحثي تحليلي شيق أعطى صورة جلية لتلك الجوانب الحياتية والفكرية في تلك الحضارات.
