هرمس الحكيم عاش في تراثنا لآلاف السنين. فكان هرمس, وإدريس واخنون وبوذاسيف وهرمس الهرامسة. تنازعت هرمس الأمم فاعتبر مصرياً وبابلياً وفارسياً وهندياً ويونانياً ورومانياً. ونسب إليه علم الطب والفلك والفلسفة والحكمة. وأحصي ما نسب إليه من كتب ومؤلفات فكانت عدة آلاف. وقد تم تقديم ثلاثة من الكتب التي نسبت إلى هرمس الأول وهي: كتاب زجر النفس, وكتاب مختار الحكم ومختار الكلم وكتاب الكواكب السبعة السيارة. كما تم ذكر هرمس في الكتب المقدسة, كما تم تقديم بعض النصوص المختارة عن هرمس في الكتابات المعاصرة, ومن ثم هرمس في التراث اليوناني, وبعدها في دوائر المعارف والموسوعات وكتب الأعلام.
