في مجموعته الشعرية (مدارج ومعارج) يهتم الشاعر علي محمد فرحات بإبراز التناص القرآني والشعري، بدلالاته الدينية والتاريخية والتي تتمظهر عبر مشهدية تصويرية يستجلبها الشاعر من مناطق متباينة، وحقب مختلفة من التاريخ العربي والإسلامي، ليشكّل بها نصاً معتمداً التكوين الرمزي في حالاته القصوى، خالعاً تلك الرمزية على الذات وعلى اللغة الشاعرة التي يكتب بها، لذلك قدم لعمله هذا بمقدمة جاءت بعنوان (خواطر وأنبياء) يشيد فيها بالإسلام والمسلمين ونبي الله محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: " ... إن هيبة النبي وهالته، وصفاء حصوره، وفوحَ أحاديه، وسلامة وصاياه، تتكفل بإرشاد الضال إلى الحقيقة والطريقة، والفقير إلى الثروة والقوة والعفة ..." ثم يعود فيخاطب القارىء "فحذار يا صاح، من الغرور الأجوف، والجهل المجحف، فهذان المدعيان المخادعان، يزودانك بحقائق من أوهام، ويقدمان لك الكؤوس الفارغة، والموائد الخاوية، وأنت في أوْج عطشكَ، ووجيع جوعك" .
في الكتاب خمسة قصائد طويلة استوت على بحور الشعر العربي الموزون والمقفى تستحضر تاريخ العرب والمسلمين وعهد النبوة كما تمجد القرآن والرسول وآل البيت عليهم الصلاة والسلام نقرأ منها أبيات يقول الشاعر فيها:
"محمدٌ، بين سجادٍ ومجتهدٍ / وأحمدٌ، عند أوج المجد والنجم ، يا ايها الكوكب المبعوث ثانيةً / إلى قلوبٍ بغير النور لم تهمِ ، رفقاً بقومٍ إلى مثواك قد وفدوا / يقبلونك بالأحداقِ واللحمِ (...)".
هذا، وقد جاءت القصائد تحت العناوين الآتية: 1- المصباح، 2- أبناءٌ وأندادٌ، 3- الفجر، 4- جوارحٌ وجوانجٌ، 5- الصوت والصدى.
