"فوجئ فيكتور ديليو حين عاد إلى مسكنه إذ وجد إيفون رودليك مدير معهد ساناك في انتظاره.. ولكنه قال له مرحاً: يا لها من مفاجأة سارة! أتجري أني كنت أفكر فيك وفي مساعيك الإنسانية بالأمس فقط؟ قال إيفون رودليك: الواقع أني أعتذر إليك يا عزيزي الأستاذ الفاضل لعدم حضوري، لأعرب عن بالغ امتناني بعد ما فعلته من أجل جاك فوتييه، لكني لم أجسر على لفائك حتى ينتهي كل شيء، وقد انتهى بكل خير. وكيف حال موكلي السابق؟ لا ريب أنك مستاء لعدم حضوره، هو وزوجته حتى الآن، لتقديم شكرهما لك، هذا هو المنتظر دائماً، لا ريب أنك عرفت من تجاربك الطويلة أن الثواب الحقيقي لا يأتي من بني الإنسان! لكن، دعنا من هذا الموضوع وقل لي كيف حال جاك؟ إنه في خير خال، واليوم فقط بدأ حياة جديدة. يسرني سماع هذا، نعم، إن الغرض الحقيقي من حضوري إلى باريس هو مصالحته مع زوجته وقد منحها صفحة التام. كان من رأيي دائماً أن هذين الاثنين خلق أحدهما للآخر، أليست المودة هي العنصر الأبقى في الحب؟ هذا رأيي دائماً، ويسعدني أن أخبرك أني استطعت إقناع فوتييه وزوجته بالعودة إلى ساناك للإقامة في ربوع المعهد بضعة أشهر لكي يتهيأ لهما استعاده الاستقرار في جو يسوده العطف. وقد تم الاتفاق بيننا نحن الثلاثة على أن نستقل القطار غداً إلى ليموج.. يا له من نبأ رائع! وأنت يا مسيو رودليك؟ لنتحدث عنك، كيف حالك؟ إني أتقدم في العمر ككل إنسان. ولم أعد أحسن الأبصار، رغم نظاراتي.. أن بصري وسمعي يزدادان سواءاً على مر الأيام. وربما يكون من بواعث الغرابة أن أصبح، أنا الذي بذلت كل ما بذلت، ليتمكن الكفيف أن يبصر، والأصم أن يسمع -أصبح أنا نفسي كفيفاً أصم!
لكن إذا حدث هذا، فسوف أحمد الله الذي تشاء إرادته أن ألامس بنفسي حقيقة الظروف التي يتقلب فيها تلاميذي. واستوى رودليك قائماً وأردف: والآن، يا أستاذي العزيز، لا يسعني إلا أن أستأذنك في الانصراف، رغم سعادتي بالحديث معك.. لأن أمامي زيارة، لا بد من إتمامها، أراهن أنها زيارة خاصة بتلميذ جديد ستصحبه معك إلى المعهد الإنساني العظيم، يستحيل إخفاء شيء عنك، يا أستاذي العزيز! نعم، أنت على حق هو صبي آخر كفيف أصم أبكم، لا أؤكد بأني سأصحب هذا الصبي إلى المعهد، ولكن إذا تم هذا، فسيكون من بواعث سعادتي أن أعلم تلميذاً يبلغ به عدد تلامذتي عشرين قبلما ألقى ربي!".
