حاولت الأسلوبية في تاريخها الطويل أن تكون منهجاً نقدياً يسعى إلى معاينة النصوص الأدبية بالإعتماد على النسيج اللغوي الذي يتشكل منه النص، مفيدة من الألسنية في الكشف عن وظائف اللغة في تجلية المعنى الذي قصد إليه المؤلف، وإذا كانت ثمة فوارق أساسية بين العلمين فإن الأسلوبية ركزت بشكل أساسي على الأثر الذي تتركه اللغة في المتلقي.
ولقد كانت طموحات الأسلوبية - ولا زالت - كبيرة جداً في إزاحة كل الأشياء الخارجة عن النص، وسعت جاهدة في التعامل مع النص تعاملاً محايثاً، لا يعنى بالسياقات الأخرى من مثل حياة المؤلف أو سيرته والسياق التاريخي والإجتماعي الذي أفرز النص، وإنما أخذت على عاتقها التعامل المباشر مع النص ساعية إلى الكشف عن أبعاده الجمالية والفنية.
وتنهض هذه الدراسة بمعالجة بعض الجوانب المهمة التي تتعلق بهذا العلم فتناول الفصل الأول: النشأة التاريخية لعلم الأسلوب وقوفاً عند أبرز أعلامه، من مثل بالي وشبتزر وياكسبون وريفاتير، وعالج الفصل الثاني أهم تعريفات وريفاتير الأسلوب على أنه إضافة (Addition) Hinzufutgung أي زخرفة وزينة وإختيار Auswahl أو Choice وإنحراف deviation Abweichung.
أما الفصل الثالث فناقش الإنحراف على أنه مصطلح له حضوره في النقد الحديث وفي النقد التراثي، وذلك بما يثيره هذا المصطلح من إشكاليات كثيرة ومتعددة؛ وقد جاء الفصل الرابع بعنوان: الغرابة والأسلوب: عبد القادر الجرجاني نموذجاً برزت فيه الكيفية أو المنهجية التي عالج فيها هذا الناقد مشكلة الغرابة من كونها ظاهرة لها إرتباط واضح بالأسلوب وإنعكاساته الأساسية على نفسية القارئ من خلال التأثير فيه؛ وختم الكتاب بفصل خامس جاء تحليلاً لثلاثة نصوص شعرية حديثة لأمل دنقل والسياب ودرويش.
