الصهيونية تجربة غربية، تبلورت كفكرة ونُظِّر لها في المجتمعات الغربية، وحاول الصهاينة جعلها تجربة يهودية خالصة تطبق على كل يهود العالم، شرقه وغربه، وكان الشهور بالمنفى خارج "صهيون" ركنّاً أساسياً فيها.
من هنا تطرح الدراسة أسئلة مهمة: هل كان الإحساس بالمنفى موجوداً على مستوى التكثيف والزخم نفسيهما لدى يهود الشرق بشكل عام، ويهود الدول العربية بشكل خاص؟ أم أنه كان إحساساً مجازياً لم يتجاوزه إلى أرض الواقع؟ وهل الظروف التي أوجدت الصهيونية في المجتمعات الغربية وُجدت وتشكلت أيضاً في المجتمعات العربية فشجعت اليهود على ترك بلدانهم العربية؟ أم أن هناك عوامل أخرى صهيونية وغير صهيونية أجبرتهم على ترك بلدانهم العربية التي عاشوا فيها؟ وهل كان اليهود جميعاً ساخطين على بلدانهم العربية بعدما تركوها، سواء في إسرائيل أو أوروبا أو أمريكا، أم كانوا يعتبرونها أوطانهم التي يشدهم الحنين إليها؟.
حاولت الدراسة الإجابة عن هذه الأسئلة، مشيرة إلى أن الوطن العربي لم يكن شتاتاً أو منفىً كما أرادت الصهيونية أن تصوره، فلم يتحدث ساسون سوميخ، صاحب السيرة، عن عزلة يهودية أو إغتراب، بل تحدث عن مشاركة في الحياة، وتعاون في الأعمال، فساسون نفى المنفى بمغزاه الصهيوني حينما لم يتحدث عن معاداة لليهود - أو كما تسميه الصهيونية "معاداة السامية" - بل يتحدث عن حياة حافلة بحسن الجوار بما تعنيه الكلمة من معنى.
وعلى الجانب الآخر يمكن النظر إلى وجود صاحب السيرة خارج العراق على أنه منفى، لتصبح من سمات هذا المنفى - لكونه عربياً يهودياً - تقييد هويته العربية في محاولة لمحوها، بعد أن جرى تهجيره مع بنى جلدته بالتهديد والقسر.
