يهدف هذا العمل إلى دراسة الزاوية عند يوسف حبشي الأشقر،وهي تتمثل بثلاثية الروائية "أربعة أفراس حمر.. لا تنبت جذور في السماء... الظل والصدى". أما كتابه الموسم بعنوان "المظلة والملك وهاجس الموت"، فمنهم من عدّه رواية، وآخرون رأوا فيه مجموعة قصصية، كما رأى في الكتاب نفسه قصصا كتبت في مكان واحد، وفي مناخ واحد، وهذا ما جعل الكتاب بعيدا عن أهداف الدّراسة، ولكن لماذا يوسف حبشي الأشقر؟ ولماذا الرواية؟
قرأت نتاج يوسف حبشي الأشقر، رواية وقصة، فوجدت في نفسي ميلاً شديدا إلى ذلك النتاج، لما تبينت فيه من عمقٍ نفسيّ شعوريّ، وبعد فكريّ، ينطلق من دائرة الإنسان اللّبناني، لينفتح على البعد الإنساني، الذي يطول الإنسان ووجوده في كل مكان وزمان، كما شدني إليه أحساسي بقدرة هذا الكتاب على الإمساك بخيوط عمله الروائي، إلى درجة يشد معها القارئ إلى متابعته على إمتداد مئات الصفحات، مع أن الأحداث الخارجية قليلة لصالح الأحداث الداخلية، التي تغوص في أعماق الشخصيات، مبررة أفكارها وعقدها وأحلامها،وآمالها، وآلامها، وتدل إشارات كثيرة في روايات يوسف حبشي الأشقر على الثقافة الرفيعة، التي يتمتع بها. وتبرز الهم الوجوديّ الأساسي،الذي يعانيه، إلا أن بعضها يشير إلى هموم أخرى وطنية، وثقافية واجتماعية متنوعة، برزت في رواياته.
