يشكل هذا الكتاب قراءة في أعمال الشاعر والروائي الألماني "هيرمان هيسى" (ولد سنة 1877 وتوفي سنة 1962)، حصل على جائزة نوبل في سنة 1962. وهذا هو (الجزء الأول) من أعمال الكاتب "محمد محمود يوسف" ويتناول فيه مؤلفات الكاتب الآتية: 1- بيتر كاملسلد، 2- وإذا استمرت الحرب"، 3- هائم متجول، 4- ديميان، 5- تحت العجلة، 6- سيد هارثا، -يتخذ هيرمان هسى من حكمة مفادها "عليك أن تجرب المستحيل لتصل إلى الممكن" طريقاً في أعماله، ذلك أن كتاباته كما يقول محمد محمود يوسف "مأساة درامسة تعكس تجربة إنسانية في حقبة معينة من تاريخ البشرية وهنا يكمن السر في عبقرية كاتبنا"، فزيارته للهند تمخضت بروايته "سيد هارثا" وهي رواية تستند إلى بداية حياة بوذا. والرواية تتناول قصة شاب تمرد ضد أبيه (أحد أفراد طبقة الكهنوت العليا عند الهندوس) والعادات المحكومة بطريقة البراهمان –أي الإله الهندوسي، أما موقفه من الحرب فانعكس في كتابه "إذا استمرت الحرب" وفيه كتب: " إيمان السياسي هو ديمقراطي ونظرتي للعالم نظرة فردانية" وبهذا يكون هيسى يفضل حرية الفرد على سيطرة الدولة أو السيطرة الجماعية".
أيضاً يضم الكتاب قصائد للشاعر هيرمان هسى تتخذ من فكرة الحنين إلى الوطن مادة لها، ومنها نقرأ "وداعاً للغابة" يقول فيها: على حقيبتي، أجلس على الشاطئ،/ أسفل على السفينة، هنود/ وصينيون ومليذيون يصرخون،/ يضحكون بصخب ويقاضون/ الليالي والأيام ورائي مجموعة/ الحياة التي أحملها الآن متوهجة (...)".
