في هذا الكتاب يكشف جاك كوفان عالِم الآثار الشهير عن ديانات العصر الحجري الحديث في بلاد الشام (سورية - فلسطين - الأردن) لذلك فالكتاب يمتد بأبحاثه على مساحة جغرافية وزمانية واسعة قسمها المؤلف إلى عصور؛ يبدأ القسم الأول من العصر الحجري الحديث ما قبل الفخاري، المسمى النيوليت ما قبل الفخار الذي يمتد على النصف الأول من الألف الثامن.
وهنا تظهر في المشرق عبادة الإلهة المرأة، وهو ما تأكد للمؤلف من خلال مشاهدة موقع تل المريبط في الفرات الأوسط في سورية، الذي يعود إلى ذلك العصر، حيث تبدو التماثيل النسائية، ومعها بنفس الوقت، آثار معاصرة لها وتدل على عبادة الثور.
إن هذه المعبودين، الآلهة والثور، أصبحا هامان جداً، فيما بعد، في كل المشرق الأدنى وفي شرق المتوسط (في كريت مثلاً) علماً بأنهما ظهرا في سورية منذ 8000 سنة قبل الميلاد، أي قبل بداية الزراعية بالضبط.
أما فيما يتعلق بالعصر اللاحق، أي بحضارات القسم الثاني من العصر الحجري الحديث ما قبل الفخاري فيشير المؤلف إلى أن "النيوليت ما قبل الفخار ب، في الألف السابع ق. م." أنه لم يستطع - أي المؤلف - أن يقدم في هذا الكتاب إلا الوثائق الفلسطينية من أريحا ومن البيضا، وأكملها بوثائق تل الرماد، قرب دمشق، العائدة إلى المرحلة الحديثة من عصر النيوليت ما قبل الفخار ب، في نهاية الألف السابع ق.م...
وهناك إكتشاف ثالث هام، أتى حديثاً على يد الأمريكي رولفسون من الموقع الأردني عين الغزال في عمان؛ إن هذا الموقع، المؤرخ على عصر النيوليت ما قبل الفخار ب، قد وجدت فيه تماثيل نسائية من الطين المشوي، تشبه تماثيل (تل أسود)، وجماجم مليئة بالكلس، تشبه تماثيل أريحا.
وكل هذا يشير بوضوح إلى دلالتها الشعائرية مما يؤكد أن هذه المنطقة؛ قد لعبت دوراً أساسياً في نشوء ديانات العصر الحجري الحديث.
