قليلة هي الدراسات التي تعنى بالإنسان وتقويمه من داخله، وهو الموضوع الأثير لدى مؤلف هذا الكتاب الدكتور توفيق الخليلن فانطلق يبحث عن مناهج الكبار وتجاربهم من أولئك المصلحين الذين كانوا دعاة الكتاب والسُّنة، فوقع الاختيار على (الإمام الرفاعي) لدراسة منهجه في التربية والسلوك، فالأخير ركن من أركان التصوف وعلم من أعلامه، من هنا أراد المؤلف تبيان مصداقية الاستناد إلى الكتاب والسنة عند الصوفية من عدمها من خلال علم من أعلام (الإمام الرفاعي) في سعي حثيث لبيان مساحة الخلاف الحقيقي بين المدارس الإسلامية المتباعدة وزيادة على ذلك بيان مصداقية الأتباع في اتباعهم لأمثال هؤلاء الكبار.
يبدأ الكتاب بتمهيد تحدث فيه المؤلف عن التصوف والمدارس الصوفية في القرن السادس الهجري، يتبع ذلك عرض لحياة ومكانة الإمام الرفاعي العلمية وبيان آراء الإمام من أهم المسائل المتعلقة في التصوف، وفصل خاص عن منهج الإمام الرفاعي في التربية والسلوك توزع على ثلاث محاور: 1-في تربيته للمريدين ووصاياه، 2-منهجه في السلوك والطريق، 3-منزلة الطريقة الرفاعية عند العلماء مع النقاش.
وأخيراً، فما يريد أن يقوله المؤلف أن مفهوم التصوف عند الإمام الرفاعي لا يخرج عن الكتاب والسُّنة، ولا يبتعد عنهما فهو لا ينظر إلى التصوف إلا على أساس أنه مستمد من الوحي وقائم عليه وأن ما خالف الوحي فهو ليس من التصوف...
أما عن تربية الإمام الرفاعي لمريديه، فيذكر المؤلف أنه وضع لطريقته منهجاً مفصلاً، فقد وضع أسساً بلغت الخمسة والخمسين يقول عنها: "أقمت بناء طريقتي على خمسة وخمسين خصلة يؤيدها خمس وخمسون آية يعضد بعضها بعضاً شيء من الآيات الفرقانية والآثار النبوية لا بد للعبد منها ولا غنى له عنها".
