إذا كانت الرومانسية نمطا شاعري الجوهر، فالواقعية هي التي سمحت للتطور أن يتمخض في أوروبا وخصوصا في روسيا، بواسطة فئة من الكتاب المبدعين. وما يقل عن الأدب السلافي، خليق بأن يقال عن عميده نيكولاي غوغول، بصفته أول من ضرب معوله بثبات وحزم، ممهدا طريق المدرسة الجديدة لمن جاء بعده من كتاب الروس. ولعل ناقداً لم ينصف هذا الكاتب العظيم كما أنصفته أرهارد بقولها:" كان بوشكين وكرمنتوف روائيين لامعين، ولكن منشئ الرواية الروسية هو غوغول"! كان غوغول متأثراً وفي أعماله الأدبية المبكرة. كان يبدو واضحا على أسلوبه تأثره بالآداب الأوروبية، لكنه في روايته " تاراس بوليا" قدم شيئا فذا، لا يوجد فيه أي تقليد أو مؤثرات خارجية. وقد وضعت هذه الرواية اسم غوغول إلى جانب أسماء أساطين القصة العالميين، كفيكتور هوغو واميل زولا وبوكاتشيو وتشارلز ديكنز وسير والتر سكوت. لقد متب غوغول " تاراس بوليا" ذات الطابع الملحمي، في فترات متقطعة استمرت أكثر من تسع سنوات، ما بين أعوام 1833 و 1842. وكان كفاح الشعب الأوكراني من أجل استقلاله والذي استمر سنين عديدة خلال القرنين السادس عشر والسابع عشر، قد أوحى لغوغول بالخطوط الرئيسية بهذه الرواية التي جاءت كما أرادها الكاتب: نفحة وطنية خالدة.
