قلما نال موضوع اهتمام الباحثين ورجال الفكر والسياسة منهم، ما ناله موضوع الصراع على بلاد الشام. فمنذ ما عرف بعهد الامتيازات الأجنبية في السلطنة العثمانية إلى اليوم لا تزال هذه المنطقة قضية الساعة، قضية حبه ومفتاح الشرق الأوسط والمرآة التي تعكس كل ما يجري حولها. ويعرف الصديق والعدو بأنها حجر الزاوية في حالتي السلم والحرب في المنطقة. لذكل راود حلم السيطرة على بلاد الشام كل القوى الاستعمارية، فتصارعت من أجلها وخلقت المحاور العربية والدولية. وقد استأثر الصراع البريطاني-الفرنسي على مجمل الكتب التي تناولت الصراع الاستعماري على بلاد الشام، فكان هناك شبه تغييب لدور إيطاليا.
من هذا المنطلق يأتي هذا الكتاب الذي حرص المؤلف فيه على تسليط الضوء على جانب من تاريخ الصراع على بلاد الشام في العصر الحديث والمعاصر وإضاءات حول الدور الإيطالي في الصراع الاستعماري على بلاد الشام. ويمكن القول بأن الكتاب يطرح آفاقاً جديدة للبحث حيث تضمن الكثير عن تفاصيل أحداث لم تنشر من قبل وكان اعتماد الباحث بالدرجة الأولى على المصادر الأجنبية وعربية جديدة بالإضافة إلى أرشيفات الدول المعنية بغية جمع المعلومات التي تعين على كتابة البحث، وبغية إظهار الصورة الكاملة للصراع الأوروبي الاستعماري على بلاد الشام.
