شهد العقدان الأخيران من هذا القرن اهتماماً كبيراً بالدراسات التي تهتم بشؤون المرأة، وبدأت بعض المراكز العلمية والبحثية عربياً ودولياً تقوم بتمويل البحوث الخاصة بالمرأة، واستجاب العديد من الباحثات والدراسات لموضوع المرأة لأنها قضيتهن اليومية، وأخذن يدرسن موضوعات المرأة اجتماعياً، واقتصادياً وسياسياً ونفسياً وأدبياً في محاولات جادة لسبر غور المشكلات التي تواجه المرأة في مجتمعات ما زالت تعاني المرأة فيها من ثقل قيود الماضي.
وتقدم الباحثة زغلولة السالم، في كتابها "صورة المرأة العربية في الدرانا المتلفزة" دراسة علمية جادة لاستكناه واقع المرأة كما تصوره أخطر وسيلة اتصالية عرفتها البشرية. فالإنسان يقضي مع التلفاز ساعات طويلة ومعها يتم تشكيل جزء من رؤانا للعالم الذي نعيشه.
إن ما يلفت النظر في هذه الدراسة المنهج العلمي الصارم الذي انتهجته الباحثة، والذي قليلاً ما يلقى العناية لدى الباحثين العرب وقد استطاعت السيدة /السالم بدراستها هذه أن تقدم تحليلات كمية ونوعية قلما نجد لها مثيلاً في الدراسات المشابهة وأعتقد أنها ستكون مستقبلاً مثلاً للاحتذاء وقد استعانت الباحثة ببعض أجزاء من نموذج تحليل لصورة المرأة في وسائل الاتصال صدر عن مركز الأبحاث للتلفاز السويدي ونشر في كتاب لمارجرت جلاجر.
وقد توصلت الباحثة إلى مجموعة من النتائج تؤكد على الصورة السلبية لدور المرأة كما يقدمها التلفاز.
