وما يكاد الضوء يدخل تلك الغرفة الواسعة المرتفعة، ذات السجف الثقيلة الكثيرة الثنيات، حتى يخفت ويبهت لينام في الأقمشة، ويتلاشى في السجف، ويكاد يضيء الزوايا المظلمة، وحدها الإطارات الذهبية كانت تتألق مشتعلة.
وكان النعاس والسلام سجينين في هذا المكان، سلام بيوت الفنانين حيث تعمل النفس الإنسانية، داخل هذه الجدران التي يسكنها الفكر، ويتحرك ثم يتلاشى في جهود عظيمة.
كان كل شيء يبدو مجهداً منهوك القوى، مع خفوت هذا الضوء المتساقط، وكأني بكل شيء يموت بعد صخب تلك الحياة وإندفاعها، وكأني بكل شيء يموت بعد صخب تلك الحياة وإندفاعها، كل شيء يستريح: الأثاث، الأقمشة، وشخصيات العظماء التي تستلقي على اللوحات غير المكتملة، وكان المسكن بكامله قد تعب من مجهود صاحبه، ومشاركة الكد والكفاح الذي يتجدد مع كل صباح.
كانت الرائحة المنبعثة من المعاجين والتبغ والتربنتين تتموج داخل الغرفة، يحبسها السّجّاد والمقاعد، ولم يكن يسود المكان أنوع نوع من أنواع الضجة، ما عدا زقزقات السنونو الحادة القصيرة، التي كانت تمر عبر المصاريع المفتوحة، تخالطها غمغماتُ باريس الغامضة التي لا تكاد تسمع فوق السطوح، كل شيء كان هادئاً ساكناً إلا غيمة من دخان أزرق تتصاعد نحو السقف، مع كل نفس كان ينفثه "أوليفييه برتان" من سيجارته، وهو مستلقٍ على الأريكة.
