من المعروف أن علم المخطوطات هو علم قديم جديد، فهو قديم لأنه بدأ مع بداية الكتاب والخط، وهو جديد بأسلوبه الحديث الذي يتعامل مع المخطوطات على أنها قطع آثارية تجب المحافظة عليها وأنها تحتوي على معلومات تمثل حلقة الوصل في تاريخ العلوم.
يستعرض هذا الكتاب "فهرس المخطوطات المصورة" المحفوظة في مكتبة مركز البحوث والدراسات الإسلامية في العراق، وهو ببلوغرافيا تشتمل على بيانات الكتب الموجودة في المركز يستفاد منها في حقول المعرفة المختلفة وتوفر على الباحث جهد البحث والتنقيب. وهي جهد جماعي قام به كلٌّ من هدى حميد عبد الكريم وهدى سليم حسين وفردوس هاشم عبد ومحيي الدين حسين محي، فساهموا في جمع المخطوطات وتصنيفها وفهرستها وترتيبها في حقول متنوعة: الآداب، التراجم، التاريخ، التصوف، الحديث وعلومه، الديانات، العقائد والمذاهب، علم الخط، العلوم البحتة، العلوم الطبية، العلوم القرآنية، الفقه وعلومه، الفلسفة والعلوم المتصلة بها، واللغة العربية وعلومها، وأخيراً "المجاميع" والمعارف العامة.
هذا، وقد وردت معلومات كل مخطوط بذكر عنوان المخطوط، اسم المؤلف، عدد الصفحات، عدد الأجزاء، مصدر المخطوط، سنة النسخ ورقم المخطوط. وبهذا يكون الكتاب إضافة مهمة إلى المكتبة العربية والإسلامية في حقل كتب التراث.
