تتميز الحرب الحديثة بكونها معركة جميع الصنوف وتسمى المعركة المشتركة وبها تبرز أدوار وواجبات كل صنف من الصنوف الرئيسة لإنجاح المعركة وتحقيق النصر.
وبذلك أصبحت الهندسة العسكرية من الصنوف الرئيسة في كافة جيوش العالم حيث تقدم وحدات هذا الصنف وعناصره الإسناد الهندسي في منطقة القتال وخلفها وتعمل على مساعدة القطعات لتبقى وتتحرك وتقاتل وفي الوقت نفسه تحرم العدو من ذلك بإقامة الموانع والصعوبات تجاهه وأصبحت وحدات الهندسة تعرف بأنها تلك الوحدات الهندسية التي توجد في منطقة المعركة وتكون جزءاً من تشكيلات الميدان وتعمل لإسناد خطة القائد التعبوية وغالباً ما تتجحفل مع الصنوف الأخرى وبهذا فإن عملها يعرف بهندسة الميدان.
إن ما وصل إليه صنف الهندسة العسكرية في يومنا هذا من تقنية وأداء عال في التنظيم والإستخدام والتنفيذ ليس وليد اليوم وإنما تكون عبر تأريخ طويل بدءاً منذ العصور القديمة في بدايات بسيطة في حقب زمنية متتابعة متطوراً مع تطور العلوم والتقنية العسكرية بالإستفادة من دروس المعارك ونتائجها وإستخدام عناصره في مهام وواجبات تشكل جزءاً من الخطة التعبوية للقائد الميداني.
كان الكتاب في مقدمة وخمسة فصول وخاتمة، فالفصل الأول بعنوان واجبات ومبادئ وتنظيم الهندسة العسكرية، أما الفصل الثاني فهو بعنوان (الأسلحة والتجهيزات للهندسة العسكرية)، في حين يبحث الفصل الثالث في التعبئة المستخدمة للجيش خلال الفتوحات الإسلامية في العصر الراشدي وخلال الفتوحات الإسلامية في العصر الأموي وكيفية تعبئة الهندسة العسكرية ضمن الجيش في الميدان ونظامها، وقد رأيت أن يكون الفصل الرابع متمماً لسابقه وجعلت عنوانه (الهندسة العسكرية في معارك الفتوحات الإسلامية الفاصلة)، الفصل الخامس من بحثي بعنوان (الواجبات الثانوية للهندسة العسكرية).
