إن علم القراءات واحد من تلك العلوم التي نشأت بفضل القرآن الكريم، وتُعد القراءات القرآنية المختلفة من متواترة وشاذة مجالاً رحباً وميداناً واسعاً وبيئة صالحة للدراسات النحوية واللغوية نظراً لما تميّزت به من دقة في الضبط وصحة في النقل، فصارت بذلك أوثق النصوص في الإستشهاد النحوي واللغوي انتفع منها العلماء واعتمدوا عليها في وضع القواعد وتثبيت الأصول بشواهد ينبغي الإحتكام إليها لأنها من القرآن الكريم الذي يعدّ بحق أوثق المصادر لدراسة اللغة العربية بلهجاتها المختلفة وتعدّ قراءاته من أخصب وأوثق المصادر لدراسة اللهجات العربية المختلفة لمعرفة طبيعة نطقها بتسجيل الظواهر المختلفة لميولها الصوتية والصرفية والنحوية.
من هنا، عزم المؤلف الدكتور هشام الحداد أن تكون إحدى القراءات غير المشهورة موضوع دراسته، وهي قراءة أبي حيوة (شريح بن يزيد الحضرمي) مقرىء الشام بعد إبن عامر. ولما كانت حروف قراءته مبثوثة منتشرة في ثنايا الكتب وموزعة في تفاسير القرآن الكريم، لذا جمع المؤلف حروف قراءته من مصادر مختلفة من أهمها كتب التفسير وبخاصة التي تُعنى بذكر القراءات تفصيلاً بتوجيهها نحوياً ولغوياً.
وقد قسم المؤلف البحث إلى : تمهيد، وثلاثة فصول، وخاتمة، ثم انتهى البحث بملحق يتضمن حروف قراءته مرتبة تبعاً لورودها في القرآن الكريم، فتضمن التمهيد: إسمه، ونسبه، وكنيته، ومولده، ونشأته، ومكانته العلمية، وأقوال العلماء فيه، وشيوخه، وتلامذته، ووفاته.
أما الفصل الأول فخصصه بالكلام على قراءته. وجعل الفصل الثاني للقضايا النحوية التي اندرجت تحتها طائفة من وجوه قراءته. وجاء الفصل الثالث للدراسة اللغوية وقسمه إلى قسمين: كان الأول منهما، للدراسة الصرفية. أما القسم الثاني، فعرض ما يتعلق من قراءاته بالظواهر الصوتية.
