كان فناً الأدب: الشعر والخطابة أبرز ما كان لدى العرب منذ عصر ما قبل الإسلام، وبقيا يؤثران في حياة العرب والمسلمين بعد ذلك في العصور التي أعقبته، لأنهما الوسيلتان الفعالتان في النفوس، ولأن صاحبيهما يحتلان مركزاً كبيراً بين أبناء تلك العصور في تصوير المشاعر والذود عن العقيدة، والفخر بالسجايا الحميدة، ولأنهما دليلان على تمتع صاحبيهما بالقدرة الفائقة التي لا يستطيعها كل أحد.
وبقيت الخطابة تواكب الشعر مدى العصور التي سبقت العصر العباسي، وتسجل -كالشعر- الكثير من الحوادث والوقائع لتلك العصور، ويبدو أنها بقيت كذلك إلى أوائل العصر العباسي، لقربه من عصر الفصاحة والبلاغة. فكان لها ولذويها الأثر الكبير في النفوس، كما كان لهما التقدير والتبجيل لدى الآخرين، لأنها وليدة الاقتدار الخاص، وسرعة البديعة، وسعة العارضة وعمق الثقافة.
وما كاد العصر الأموي ينطوي أمره حتى كانت الخطابة والخطباء قد تضاءلا أو كانا يتجهان نحو الضعف والقلة، اللهم إلا ما أثر لخطيبين هما: خالد بن صفوان وشبيب بن شيبة ابن عمه، فق أعجب بهما غير واحد من معاصريهما، لما قدر لهما من موهبة واقتدار في هذا الفن.
وما يسعى إليه هذا الكتاب هو تقديم نبذة يسيرة عن ابن شبيب ورسم صورة تكاد تكون واضحة لحياته وثقافته وعلاقته برجال عصره، ودرس نتاجه وخصائصه الفنية، وجمع أشهر خطبه وأقواله المأثورة ويحضرنا قول مفاده" وإذا وصف بعض الشعراء بأنه من ساقة الشعراء، فإن ابن شيبة يكون من ساقه الخطباء في العصر العباسي الأول.
