منذ نصف قرن تقريباً، انجذب الكاتب العُماني لكتابة القصة القصيرة بفضل شكلها المنفتح، ولكونها وسيلة ناجحة لعكس مُتغيرات الواقع ومفارقاته وتقلباته، إلا أنّها لم تأخذ مسارها الواضح إلا عقب النصف الثاني من ثمانينيات القرن المنصرم، وعبر هذا الكتاب، "أنا الوحيد الذي أكل التفاحة؟"، يُقدم الكاتبان هدى حمد وسليمان المعمري مُختارات قصصية لأكثر من ستين كاتباً عُمانياً، بين من غامر مُبكراً بالكتابة، وبين من اختمرت تجربته بالمراس.
وقد اعتمد الكاتبان معايير ساعدت على إتمام المشروع، أبرزها الجماليات الفنية للنصوص المُختارة وقدرتها على تأسيس مستويات جديدة للتأويل لدى القارئ، تلك النصوص التي اتسمت - رغم تفاوتها - بجزالة اللغة وقوة الفكرة، وعجنتْ نفسها بالجغرافيا المحلية - دون أن يكون هدفها الوحيد هو التوثيق - وإنما إعطاءُ "المعنى" للأشياء.
من جهة أخرى، لا ينفي محرِّراً الكتاب احتكامهما إلى الذوق الشخصي في اختيار هذا النص دون ذاك، مؤكّديّن أنّه لو أقدم غيرهما من الكُتّاب او الباحثين على تجربة مماثلة فإنهم سيقدِّمون - بلا شك - كتاب مختارات مختلفاً.
وعلى أية حال، يمكن للقارئ أن يرصد هنا، أجيالاً مختلفة من كتّاب القصة في عُمان، بدءاً من ثمانينيات القرن الماضي وحتى منتصف العقد الثاني من الألفية الجديدة.
