تعتبر خزائن الكتب ميزة من مميزات عصر المرابطين الذي توحدت فيه الأندلس وازدهرت فيه الثقافة الإسلامية إلى حد كبير. وقد اشتهرت في هذا العصر عدد من الخزائن التي ما زال بعضها قائماً حتى اليوم. وخزانة ابن يوسف للكتب هي إحدى الخزائن التي يعود تاريخها إلى القرن السادس عشر، وهي تقع في مقصورة من مقاصر الجامع الكبير الذي شرع في بنائه في عاصمة ملكة بمراكش، والقرائن المتوفرة تدل بشكل لا يقبل اللبس على أن دور هذه الخزائن المسجدية من أدوار في تاريخ نشر الثقافة والمعرفة في جميع البلاد الإسلامية.
وقد كان لخزانة ابن يوسف شأن كبير في عصر الموحدين، والعصر المريني، وعصر السعديين والعصر العلوي، إذ استمر كل من الجامع وخزانته في أداء مهمتها طيلة هذه العصور. وقد انبعثت هذه الخزانة في شكل جديد في أوائل العصر العلوي وتميز انطباعها بطابع آخر وهو وضع فهرس لها يمدنا بمعلومات طريفة عن حالتها في عهد المولى إسماعيل.
وفي العصر الحديث عند المشرفون على الخزانة إلى وضع فهرس دقيق للتعريف بالمخطوطات حسب الطريقة الحديثة المتبعة في وضع الفهارس وهي التي يضمها هذا الكتاب المطبوع. ومجموع هذه المخطوطات تتناول العلوم الإسلامية من تفسير للقرآن الكريم وإعرابه وقراءاته وغريبه وناسخه ومنسوخه وتجويده، ورسمه، وحديث ومصطلحاته، وفقه وأصول وعقائد وحساب وفرائض وشروح وحواش للأمهات المعروفة ولغة ونحو وعروض وبلاغة وحساب وتوقيت وطب وأوفاق ودواوين شعرية وقصائد ملحونة.
