لقد بدأ - مع مطلع القرن العشرين - إهتمام متزايد بعلم اللغة والألسنية، حيث انتقلت الدراسات اللغوية نقلة نوعية على هذا الصعيد، ثم سرعان ما امتد هذا الإهتمام ليغزو حقل الأدب والأعمال الأدبية، بصفتها نصوصاً ذات بنية لغوية في الأصل، وقبل أي شيء.
وقد كان من معطيات هذا الإهتمام، وهذه النقلة، نشوء علم جديد يبحث في لغويات النصوص المنطوقة والمدونة عرف في الدراسات الحديثة بــ "علم الأسلوب"، أو "الأسلوبية" (Stylistics)، كما قد أصبح هذا العلم منهجاً ومدخلاً موضوعياً للنصوص الأدبية معتمداً على الألسنية وبحوثها في تحديد خصائصها وسماتها الجمالية.
إن هذه الدراسة تطمح إلى تناول جوانب الأسلوب كافة، وقضاياه في نقدنا القديم، وهذا يعني تناول كثير من الجزئيات التي تصلح كل جزئية منها أن تكون موضوع دراسة مستقلة، وإننا لنجد كثيراً من الدراسات قد تناولت هذه الجزئيات كموضوع مستقل، كالبحث في الصورة الفنية في التراث النقدي والبلاغي، أو المعاني، أو قضية الشعر المحدث، وعلى الرغم من أهمية هذه الدراسات، وما قد تقدمه من نظرة تفصيلية لكل موضوع من هذه الموضوعات على حدة، فإن وضع هذه الموضوعات في ظل تصور كلي، وإطار شمولي يعني الكثير أيضاً، حيث ترد الأمور إلى نصابها، ويعرف لكل مقداره وقيمته.
