التعصب ظاهرة اجتماعية شديدة الخطورة، وبخاصة عندما يتخذ أشكالاً عدوانية سافرة. وهو قديم في التاريخ، ومستمر في هذه الأيام، في مناطق مختلفة من العالم، بدرجات متفاوتة، في ثنايا العلاقات بين الأمم والقوميات، والعلاقات بين الأديان والطوائف الدينية، والعلاقات بين المذاهب والتنظيمات السياسية، والعلاقات بين الجماعات الصغرى والمحلية. وقد تنبه لخطورة هذه الظاهرة وانبرى لدراسته مفكرون وعلماء نفس واجتماع من ثقافات مختلفة. ونظراً لما لآرائهم من أهمية قصوى، عمد المؤلف إلى جمع نصوصهم ومقالاتهم في هذا الكتاب الذي يلقي على التعصب أضواء مختلفة، تبعاً لموقف كل مؤلف وثقافته. ولقد تم اختيار النصوص وترتيبها بحسب التسلسل التاريخي لتأليفها، من دون تدخل منه بتحليل أو مقارنة، وذلك حرصاً منه على التأثير في حكم القارئ، حيث أنه لا يقدم دراسة، بل وثائق للدارسة والتأمل والاستعبار.
