يمثل هذا الكتاب محاولة جادة للتعريف ولمعالجة محتوى اليناميات النفسية بطريقة تجعله أكثر طواعية لسياق علم النفس الأكاديمي. تمّ في الجزء الأول تلخيص القوى العقلية اللاشعورية، وتم تتبعها في تأثيراتها خلال المراحل النهائية من الطفولة إلى الرشد. تم في هذا الجزء إكمال الآراء السائدة لفرويد في هذا الصدد بإضافة مواقف المنشقين. الأول عن النظرية والاتجاه التحليلي النفسي مثل أولدر رويونج، درانك، والمدرسة التحليلية الجديدة، وعلماء نفس الأنا. أما الجزء الثاني فقد ركز على موضوع الحصر، واستجاباته المحددة لا شعورياً، وتمّ فحص الحصر من حيث نشأته، وأصوله، والتعيين الذاتي، ووظائفه. وقد تضمنت الاستجابات للحصر سلسلة ميكانيزمات الدفاع، وأيضاً مجموعة متنوعة من الاستجابات السلوكية الأخرى. أما في الجزء الثالث فقد تمّ ربط التأثيرات اللاشعورية مباشرة بالاهتمامات الرئيسية لعلم النفس قبل الإدراك، والتفكير والسلوك، وتمّ استطلاع مدى تأثير القوى العقلية اللاشعورية في خلق المظاهر اللاشعورية، وأيضاً تشكيل السلوك السوي ببعض التفصيل بالنسبة لكل عملية بدورها.
هذا وقد تمّ نشر التوضيحات البحثية التي تدلّ على إمكانية التحقق من التوكيدات السيكوديناميكة من خلال الكتاب في محاولة إضافية من الباحث لتكامل المادة العلمية مع علم النفس الأكاديمي التقليدي. وقد اتضح للباحث وجود مجموعة متنوعة من الأساليب التي يمكن استخدامها مع القضايا المراوغة المحيرة ظاهرياً. وهو يقول بأن تلك القضايا يمكن فحصها باستخدام مناهج البحث التقليدية مثل الملاحظات والتقديرات والمواقف التجريبية المضبوطة، والفنيات الإسقاطية المعدلة مثل صورة بلاكي، والدراسات المعملية المضبوطة تنويمياً. ويأمل الباحث أن تساعد تلك الأمثلة على أنهار عاصفة التعارض والجدل، على الاحترام العلمي للفروض الدينامية.
