"في اليوم التالي لهبوب الإعصار على المدينة، راح النهر يخفض مستواه حتى تكشف عن بقايا عدد من السيارات وثلاث حافلات اعترضت طريق المياه مئات الجثث وجدت على امتداد مجراه والأخبار تحدثت عن ناج جرفته المياه أكثر من ثلاثين كيلومتراً.
بين السيارات التي ظهرت مدمرة سيارة الداتسون العائدة لصديقي فرويلان غومث. لم نعثر قط على جثته، ربما لأنه أحد الذين رمي بهم في الحفرة الجماعية، دون تحديد هويتهم أو محاولة معرفة أماكن أسرهم، لأن الحكومة أصرت على إخفاء الكثير من الجثث لتقليص حجم المأساة.
جاءت إلى بيتي ومعها كدسة من الأوراق (تبين أنها سيرة ويوميات) وعدد من أشرطة سجلها رجل عجوز . وضحت لي أنها شرعت تواً بقراءة مخطوطات زوجها فوجدت فيها برهاناً على أنه ما زال حياً.
استغل فرويلان، حسب زعمها، الإعصار ليتظاهر بأنه مات وهرب مع امرأة تدعى ظاهرياً كارمن، بل إنها أكدت لي أنها تعرف أين هو "لكنني" قالت لي "لن أذهب للبحث عنه، لأنني بحاجة لأن يعود من تلقاء نفسه".
كانت خطتها أن أقوم بتصحيح النصوص وترتيبها بطريقة تستطيع معها أن تنشرها كرواية. وبهذا يستطيع فرويلان أن يقرأ يومياته ونصوصه كما لو كانت غريبة علية، قصة خيالية، تجعله حسب كلمات باتريثيا الحرفية، ينتبه إلى أنه يعيش معي حياته كالسابق".
