من العلوم التي تطورت سريعاً خلال العقود القليلة الماضية، علم الإشعاع الحياتي، إذ بدأ العالم بعد عام 1950 يعير إهتماماً خاصاً لتاثيرات الأشعة المؤينة على الأنظمة الحية، وخاصة بعد حادثتي هيروشيما وناكازاكي.
وبعد توالي إستمرار إختبار الأسلحة النووية في الطبيعة زادت مخاوف العالم من المتساقطات وتأثيراتها البايولوجية، لقد واكب إنتشار المفاعلات النووية والمعجلات الحديثة إنتاج نظائر مشعة جديدة لم تكن موجودة أصلاً في الطبيعة والتي فتحت آفاقاً جديدة إلى التقنية الحديثة بإستخدامها في مختلف مجالات النهضة العصرية، مثل الصناعة والطب والزراعة وغيرها.
وبرزت نتيجة لذلك الحاجة الملحة إلى معرفة أوسع بتأثير الإشعاعات الناتجة من هذه الإستخدامات على العاملين وعموم الناس والممتلكات وكذلك طرق الوقاية منها، وتكونت الهيئات الإقليمية والدولية لبحث هذه التأثيرات وإيجاد حدود التعرض الأمن لهذه الإشعاعات.
لقد كانت الدوافع الحقيقية التي دعتنا لتقديم هذا الكتاب هي توفير المعارف الأساسية في موضوع الإشعاع الحياتي إبتداء من تركيب الذرة وماهية الإشعاع وتأثيرات الإشعاع على الانظمة الحية وإنتهاء بتركيب المفاعلات النووية وإستغلال الطاقة الناتجة عن الإنشطار النووي للأغراض المختلفة، وربما شغل هذا الكتاب جزء من الفراغ الذي تعاني منه المكتبة العربية في الكتب المتخصصة باللغة العربية عن تأثيرات الإشعاع على الخلايا الحية والإنسان على وجه الخصوص.
