محاولة لتوظيف "منهج الإستغراب"، في دراساتنا التاريخية العربية، والإعتراف بحاجتنا إلى إستشراف النموذج الحضاري الغربي الذي خاض قبلنا مضمار النهضة العسير على الصعد كافة وإستخدم مختلف الوسائل ليهيمن على سواه، منها الإستكشافات الجغرافية والإستشراق والإستعمار والغزو الثقافي مروراً بالعولمة والنظام الدولي الجديد، وليس إنتهاء بهيمنته الثقافية، وبعد أن انتهى الإستشراق وانتهت دواعيه أن لنا أن نقرأ بأسلوب إنساني منفتح تاريخ الغرب وتجربته لصياغة مشروع حضاري عربي مستقبلي، فيحاول الكتاب تطبيق هذا المنهج بقراءة تفاصيل موضوعة "حركة النهضة الإيطالية" بوصفها منطلقاً للنهضة الأوروبية، في ضوء آراء بعض مؤرخينا ومقارنة هذه الآراء ببعضها، بمباحث تتضمن وصفاً لمعالم هذا المنهج أولاً، وقراءتهم لأسباب ظهور النهضة، وخصائصها، وقراءة في إسهامات روّادها، ونتائج هذه النهضة، وإنتشارها خارج إيطاليا ثم تراجعها، ومن ثم متابعة إنعكاس دراسة تاريخ النهضة الإيطالية ثم تراجعها، ومن ثم متابعة إنعكاس دراسة تاريخ النهضة الإيطالية في تلمس ملامح مشروع نهضوي عربي.
لنخلص إلى محاولة تشخيص ملامح المشروع النهضوي العربي، ورؤاه المستقبلية، إذ يمكن أن تصب هذه القراءات إذا ما تم تقويمها وتصويبها وإستخلاص نتائجها في إعادة قراءة معمقة لمشروع النهضة العربية.
كما يتضمن الكتاب دراسة أخرى في قسمه الثاني؛ تتناول مسيرة المفكر الإنكليزي (توماس هوبز)، فيقدم قراءة سيرته وتقييمها بالروح نفسها التي ينبغي أن تُقْرأ بها النهضة الإيطالية، وتقويم مسيرته الفكرية والسياسية برؤى وزوايا منتجة تنعكس إيجاباً على حياتنا السياسية المعاصرة ومشكلاتنا الراهنة، بعد أن نبتعد عن تناول أفكاره بمعزل عن زمانه وظروفه التاريخية والموضوعية.
