لا تحدث أشياء كثيرة في قصص آنا غافالدا، فلا أحداث غير عادية ولا مفاجآت غير منتظرة، ولا شيء إلا جريان الحياة العادي، وهو ما يعطيها هذه الجاذبية، وغياب الإثارة أحسن تعبير عن خواء الوجود لدى أناس مصيرهم إلى التفاهم ذاتها، خلف واجهة اجتماعية براقة. ففي (هذا الرجل وهذه المرأة) زوجان يتوجهان في عطلة نهاية الأسبوع، على الطريق السريع، إلى منزلهما الريفي بسيارة فاخرة. مستغرق كل منهما بأفكاره، ملتزماً الصمت. ولا يحدث أي شيء لكن آنا غافالدا، في أقل من أربع صفحات تتوصل إلى نقل الوحدة الممضة التي يعيشها هذان الزوجان، من دون أطفال، من دون حب، بينما تخليا منذ وقت طويل عن الحياة، لتقتصر اهتماماتهما على البحث عن نوع من الراحة المادية. وقد يحدث في أماكن أخرى، كما في القصة التي تعطي عنوانها للكتاب، أن من يظن نفسه وحيداً ومنسياً من الجميع يفاجأ مفاجأة سارة. ذلك أن مجموعة آنا غافالدا القصصية تعكس الحياة كما هي، بمسراتها وأشجانها المألوفة، وهو ما يفسر، من دون شك، النجاح الباهر الذي لاقته، نجاح عير معتاد لكتاب أول، لمؤلفة شابة، ولمجموعة قصصية بالخصوص.
