يضم الكتاب تقريرات العلامة الشيخ عبد القادر الرافعي، مفتي الديار المصرية، على حاشية ابن عابدين المسماة "رد المحتار"، حيث وبعد أن قام بقراءتها عدة مرات، وقف في كل مرة منها على غوامضها وأسرارها، وكشف عنها حجب الخفاء حتى أضاءت لديه بأنوارها انتهى به الأمر إلى التعليق عليها...
التعليق الذي هو غايته التي وصل إليها بعد هذه القراءة، التي اقتضت منه البحث والتنقيب، والإيضاح والتقريب، والنظر والتحرير، والبحث والتقرير... وبعد أن استقام له الأمر... وبعد مزيد من النظر والتنقيح في عمله هذا، قام بوضع نقطة النهاية، واسماً عمله هذا باسم (التحرير المختار) الذي لاقى ترحيباً شديداً حينذاك...
ولما يزل الباحثون والدارسون يلجئون إليه في أبحاثهم ودراساتهم إلى يومنا هذا، حيث يعتبر الكتاب مرجعاً فقهياً في فقه الإمام أبي حنيفة، إذ أن كتاب حاشية ابن عابدين هو من أفضل كتب الفقه الحنفي، وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن كتاب ابن عابدين هذا قد سمي بأسماء مختلفة: 1-حاشية ابن عابدين، 2-ردّ المحتار على الدرّ المختار شرح تنوير الأبصار، وهذه نبذة عن العلامة ابن عابدين صاحب الحاشية، عرف بابن عابدين وهي شهرة تعود إلى جده محمد صلاح الدين الذي أطلق عليه اللقب لصلاحه، ووالده الشيخ محمد أمين، من ذرية الحافظ محمد عبد الحي الداودي صاحب التأليف المشهورة، وجدته لأبيه هي بنت الشيخ محمد أمين المحبي صاحب (خلاصة الأثر).
وقد سلك ابن عابدين الطريقة النقشبندية على يد الشيخ خالد النقشبندي بدمشق، وقد صلى ابن عابدين على جنازة النقشبندي إماماً، وألف رسالة في المنافحة عن خالد النقشبندي سماها "سل الحسام الهندي".
