إن أشرف العلوم بعد القرآن الكريم سنّة المصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلم، التي سارت لتحصيلها وطلبها الركبان في مختلف البلاد والأوطان وعلى مدى الأزمان.
ومن حفظ الله تعالى لسنّه نبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم أنْ هيأ لها رجالاً حفظوها من تحريف الغالين، وانتحال المبطلين، وتأويل الجاهلين، إذ حرسوها وصانوها من أهل الإلحاد والبدع، فقاموا بعد حفظها على تمييز صحيحها من سقيمها، وقويها من ضعيفها، وشرحوها وغاصوا في بحر معانيها وأحكامها، فأناروا السبيل لمريديها والباحثين فيها.
ومن شراحها الإمام المازري، والقاضي عياض اليحصبي، والإمام النووي والعلامة الطيبي، ومحمد الكرماني، والحافظ ابن حجر العسقلاني، وبدر الدين العيني، ومن بعدهم الإمام السيوطي الذي شرح الكتب التسعة وبعض المسانيد ومنها مسند الإمام الشافعي رضي الله عنه، الذي جُمعت فيه أحاديثه في الأم والمبسوط وبعض أماليه وغيرها، ولمكانة هذا الإمام ومسنده، ومكانة شارحه، وأهمية شرحه الذي جاء مختصراً لشرحي الرافعي وابن الأثير، والذي اشتمل على فوائد متنوعة في الفقه والحديث وعلم الرجال واللغة والغريب وغيرها.
ولخلو المكتبات من شرح مطبوع على مسند الشافعي، اعتنى بتحقيقه ودراسته الدكتور حسن القيسي وجعله أطروحته للدكتوراه، وقد قسم المؤلف عمله في الكتاب على قسمين: أما القسم الأول: الدراسة، فقد اشتمل على تمهيد وفصلين: أما التمهيد فقد تناول فيه التعريف بشارح المسند وصاحبه، وأما الفصل الأول: فكان في مصادر السيوطي ومنهجه في شرح المسند، وأما الفصل الثاني: فكان في التعريف بالكتاب ونسخته الخطية ومنهجه في التحقيق، أما القسم الثاني: فكان من نصيب النص المحقق.
