المرض النفسي قديم قدم الإنسان وتجد له ذكراً في تاريخ كل الحضارات. وقد تفوقت الحضارة العربية أيام الدولة العباسية في مجال الطب النفسي، حيث تم بناء المستشفيات المتخصصة في علاج المرض النفسي وبنيت أجنحة في المستشفيات العامة للمرضى النفسيين حيث كان يتم العلاج في حدود المعرفة وقتئذ. وحتى زمن قريب لم يكن يعرف شيء يذكر عن آليات الأمراض النفسية في الدماغ، ولكن الأبحاث الحديثة في العلوم العصبية والنفسية أتاحت لنا بصيصاً من المعرفة تمكن العلماء بفضلها من إيجاد أدوية وأساليب فعالة لعلاج هذه الأمراض. وهناك صعوبة أخرى تواجهنا في البلدان النامية، وهي قلة المختصين في علاج المرض النفسي من أطباء وممرضين وتركزهم في المدن الكبيرة، مما دعا إلى ضرورة دمج الصحة النفسية في الخدمات الصحية الأولية بعد إجراء التدريب اللازم. إن حاجة هؤلاء الأطباء للتدريب تتبع منا نعلم من نقص التدريب في مجال الصحة النفسية في معظم كليات الطب في العالم العربي، أو عدم فعالية التدريب الذي يقتصر على إعطاء بعض المحاضرات ومشاهدة بعض المرضى ويشعر الطبيب بأن تدريبه كان قاصراً بعد تخرجه ومواجهته للعدد الكبير من المرض النفسية في عياداته. والهدف من تأليف هذا الكتاب هو سد النقص في المكتبة العربية وتقديم المعلومات الأساسية في الطب النفسي بشكل سهل والإبتعاد عن النقاط الجدلية، وقد إستعملت المصطلحات العربية حسب المعجم الطبي العربي الموجد المعتمد من قبل مجلس وزراء الصحة العرب وألحق به فصل العلاج النفسي.
