إن سعينا لكشف الحقائق يقودنا إلى تساؤلات تتعلق بالمعرفة الإنسانية ومصادرها. كيف تنشأ المعرفة عند الإنسان؟ كيف أنتج الإنسان الأفكار والمفاهيم؟ هل تنحصر المعرفة البشرية في حدود المحسوس؟ هل من العبث توجيه العقل لمعرفة الغيب وما وراء عالم الحس والمادة؟ إن الإجابة عن مثل هذه التساؤلات، مهما كان نوع الإجابة، تحدد معالم الصورة التي نرى بها الكون والوجود فلسفياً وتمثل نقطة البداية لبناء نظرية متكاملة عن الكون والعالم.
ويهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تبيان أن العلم بمنهجه التجريبي الاستقرائي يتكامل مع الفلسفة بمنهجها العقلي الاستنباطي، فكلاهما يضع حجراً في البناء الذي يعكس شكله ومحتواه الصورة الكلية المتناسقة للعالم. لا أحد يستطيع أن يفي على نحو المطلق أن الحقائق التي تتناولها العلوم التجريبية ليس وراءها في مرحلة تتجاوز الحس حقائق أعمق منها وتتكامل معها. إن أقصى ما يخالط الفكر العلمي التجريبي هو الشك في وجود علام لمجرد يزخر بالحقائق المجردة أما النفي المطلق لهذا العالم وحقائقه المجردة التي تقف وراء ما نشاهده من ظواهر فهو غير ممكن، ذلك لأن النشاط العلمي التجريبي يقتصر على شؤون وأعراض المادة نفياً وإثباتاً. وأما إثبات الجوهر المادي وراء الظواهر الطبيعية فهو من حق العقل الفلسفي، فبعد أن يثبت الفيلسوف وجود الجوهر المادي خارج الذهن يأتي دور العلوم لكي تبحث عن أسرار الطبيعة وأعراض المادة، ولا يحق للعالم الطبيعي أن يمارس المنهج العلمي ذاته في نفي أو إثبات الوجود اللامادي.
في هذا الكتاب سنتناول بصورة رئيسية، في فصول متتابعة مستقلة نسبياً، أربع مواضيع هي المادة، الزمان، الواقعية والسببية. وسنقف في كل مرة وراء التطور العلمي التاريخي الذي أدى إلى تكوين الرؤية العلمية لهذه المواضيع، نستعرض بعدها التصور الفلسفي العقلي للمدرسة الفكرية اليونانية والإسلامية لما كان لهذه المدرسة من رؤية فلسفية عقلية عميقة، ذات بعد تاريخي، والتزام بالمنطق الأرسطي.
