كوركيس بن حنّا عواد (1326 هـ - 1413 هـ / 1908 - 1992م) من الشخصيات البغدادية المعروفة في العراق، وهو من عائلة آل عواد أحد العوائل المسيحية في الموصل، واستوطنوا بغداد، وكان أخوه ميخائيل عواد يعمل سكرتيرا لمكتب وزير المعارف في العهد الملكي، وأشتهر كوركيس عواد بالعمل الدؤوب وسعة الإطلاع، إضافة إلى التأليف لكثير من المقالات والكتب بما تجود به قريحته من الأفكار يضاف إلى تخلقه بالأخلاق الحسنة والصفات الرفيعة.

موضوع "النياتات الطبية" من فروع العلم الواسعة التي عُني بها الباحثون القدماء والمحدثون من عرب وغيرهم، فألفوا فيه العديد من الكتب والرسائل والصول والمقالات التي لا تدخل تحت حصر.
فلقد وضع العرب التصانيف الباحثة في شؤون النباتات الطبية، وأكثروا من ذلك أيّما إكثار، حتى بات الإلمام بأسماء ما ألّفوه في هذا الباب، يقتضي أن يفرَد له كتاب واسع الأطراف.
وينطوي المؤلَّف الذي يضعه المؤلف بين أيدي القراء، على "ثَبَتٍ" بأشهر ما كُتب قديماً وحديثاً، عن النباتات ذات الأثر البالغ في معالجة الأمراض، وفي حفظ الصحة والإبقاء عليها.
ولا ريب في أن العرب قد كشفوا، بطول البحث والتجربة، عن مزايا جملة صالحة من تلك النباتات، وعرفوا ما لها من أثر في اكتساب الصحة ودفع المرض، وأبانوا عن وجوه استعمالها في ما ينتاب جسم الإنسان من أعراض، فتوصلوا إلى حقائق جديرة بالعناية والتدبّر، بل أن العلم الحديث قد أقرّ جانباً صالحاً منها وأيّده.
ولقد جاء ترتيب مواد هذا الكتاب، في صنفين أساسيين:
الأول: المؤلفات العربية القديمة (وهي التي صُنّفت منذ صدر الإسلام حتى أواسط القرن الثالث عشر للهجرة = أواسط القرن التاسع عشر للميلاد).
الثاني: المؤلفات العربية الحديثة (وهي التي ألّفت من بعد ذلك إلى أيامنا الحاضرة).
ووُزعت مواد كل صنف منهما بين قسمين:
أولهما: المؤلفات التي ذُكرت فيها أسماء مؤلفيها.
ثانيهما: المؤلفات التي جاءت غُفلاً من أسماء مؤلفيها.
وختم الكتاب بثلاثة فهارس هجائية، وهي:
1- فهرس أسماء "الأشخاص".
2- فهرس أسماء "المؤلفات" المذكورة في الكتاب.
3- فهرس "الموضوعات" التي تدور عليها تلك المصنّفات.
