في بداية سنوات الثلاثينيات، وصل طرد قادم من القسطنطينية إلى مكتب المجلًة الروسية "أرقام" التي كانت تصدر في باريس. كانت المخطوطة موقَعة باسم م. آغييف، الذي لم يكن معروفاً ولم يظهر له أثر في ما بعد، مما ترك تكهنات كثيرة حول هذا الكاتب الذي قدَم نصاً قويَاً وصادماً، سرعان ما يظهر ذلك في الصفحات الأولى التي يصف فيها الراوي موقفه من أمَه، حيث يظهر لنا آغييف، قدرته العميقة والصارخة على تقديم الصور المدهشة، المتناقضة، والتي تصيب هدفها عبر اختزالاتها المدوَخة.
هذه ليست رواية عن الكوكايين، بل هي رواية مع كوكايين، فنتائج الإدمان على الكوكايين، رغم هولها، تبدو بهدف الدخول إلى أعماق النفس البشريَة.
إنها رواية عن ذلك التمزَق الذي يعيشه الإنسان بين حدَي الخير والشرَ، المسؤولية واللامبالاة، الألمعية والتهتَك...
"كان حنانها، غير المغناج، والنابع من الروح، يثقل ضميري ويمنعني من إظهار حقيقتي الدنيئة كاملة، عبر ما يسمى عادة باللأحشمة، مع أنَ هذا باطل، لأن الإغراء الرئيسي والمتأرجح للإنحلال الإنساني هو انتهاك الحشمة، وليس غيابها".
