هناك أولاً جدتي، وهذه الرواية روايتها, وهي جدتي لأمي. ولقد ماتت قبل خمس سنوات. أما سنة ميلادها فلا أعرفها بالضبط، لأنها هي أيضاً لم تكن تعرفها. لكنها على أغلب الظن سنة 1901 أو 1902.
قبل زواجها كانت تدعى زهية ميشال عبود. وبعد الزواج بات اسمها زهية حداد. حين مات جدي تحول اسمها فوراً إلى أرملة سليم حداد. وهذا الاسم الأخير كان جزءاً من شماتة البلدة بها. أما بالنسبة إلي فهي كانت دائماً "جدتي، زهية".
جدتي زهية راوية الحكايات. وجدتي زهية التي كانت تحسب أن الناس هم دود قز، وأن معظمهم ينتهون ديدان ميتة وسوداء، وأن قلة منهم فقط تتحول إلى فراشات صفراء.
جدتي زهية الفراشة. وجدتي زهية التي استنتجت كل تلك الأشياء أيام كانت تعمل مساعدة لبروسبر فرتوني إتيان بورتاليس في مختبره الشهير.
