لقد كانت بداية هذا النوع من العلاج دون منهج محدد أو طبيعة علمية واضحة، وهذا يعود لأن كل إنسان يملك عقل يصنع عوالم مختلفة من الخيال في الذهن يستطيع من خلاله رسم واقع موازي أو تخيّل جوانب هو في أمسّ الحاجة لها.
بعد تطور العلوم المختلفة ونجاح الإنسان في الإبتكارات والإختراعات في أكثر من ميدان وموقع نجد أن تقنيات التخيل والخيال بدأت تمارس كعلاج ناجح وفعّال لدى كثير من المرضى النفسيين. ولا غروا ولا استغراب في هذا فإن قوة الخيال الذي يملكه الإنسان تمكنه من تجاوز كثير من الصعوبات والتغلب على الواقع القاسي أو التغلّب على مسببات المرض نفسه. ومن هذه الجزئية وضعت تقنيات وطرق هي في الحقيقة تراكمات لخبرات طويلة في استخدام قوة العقل في التخيل لتجنيب الإنسان ويلات وآلام المرض النفسي.
يعد هذا الكتاب واحداً من قلة من المؤلفات التي تصدت لهذا الموضوع العلمي حيث يحاول المؤلف، الدكتور عبد الله الحريري، وهو متخصص في العلاج النفسي استخدام تقنيات العلاج بتأكيد الذات التخيلي في واحداً من أهم الأمراض النفسية وأكثرها شيوعاً وهو الرهاب الإجتماعي.
