يشكل هذا الكتاب سجلاً تاريخياً وإجتماعياً حافلاً لتاريخ مدينة طرابلس اللبنانية على مرّ العصور، ويسلط الضوء على تاريخ عائلة من عائلاتها الشهيرة للفترة (1579-1640) وهم (بنو سيفا)، ينتسب بنو سيفا إلى المقدم جمال الدين الملقب بسيفا وهو إبن أحد المماليك الجراكسة وعمالهم في طرابلس وعكار وحسن الأكراد وما والاها، ويعتبرهم اسطفان الدويهي تركماناً إذ يقول "وفيها (أي في سنة 1579م الموافق 997ه) استقرت طرابلس باشاوية وتولى تدبيرها إبن سيفا التركمان وذلك بسبب أن المير منصور بن عساف قتل عبد الساتر إبن الكريدي شيخ البترون وغادر شيخ جبيل وأمراء بيت الحنش، في فتقا". وهكذا لا يكتفي المؤلف بعرض رأي واحد عن تاريخ هذه العائلة، بل يستعرض رأي أكثر من مؤرخ وبعض المعطيات التاريخية لحكام طرابلس وخاصة المماليك والعثمانيين، ويعرض للتناقضات والخلافات السائدة على حكم المدينة، بما فيها المعارك التي جرت وقتئذ بين الإقطاع والأمراء، ومنها الصراع بين يوسف سيفا وفخر الدين "وكان فخر الدين قد ضم بيروت إلى إقطاعته وتخلص من خصمين قويين: علي الحرفوش ومنصور الفريخ واستولى على بيروت وسنجقية صيدا، وكان يتبعها أقاليم جبل عامل وبلاد بشاره ومنطقتا صور وعكا ...". وهنا يستعرض المؤلف معارك نشبت بين بني سيفا والأمير فخر الدين منها "معركة نهر الكلب (598)" ، "معركة جونيه (1605)" ، "معركة عراد (1606)" . لقد كان الأمير يوسف باشا سيفاً شجاعاً تشهد له جميع الوقائع التي خاضها ضد فخر الدين".
